What do you desire?
If you can pause for a moment and answer this question: What is it that you truly want? What is your deepest desire? Not what you want at a specific milestone e.g., 5 months, 1 year, 10 years, upon retirement, and so on.
I paid close attention to people who are older than me, and especially those who are close to retirement or are retired (P.S. I do not subscribe to that societal limit anyways, but that is a different topic). What I noticed is that most people were saying I just want a simple life, have a small garden (or any form of closeness to nature). So, the question that I asked myself: why do we get so busy during our youth to achieve some later state that is meant to get us happiness and contentment. Why are we not content and happy now, where we are, with whatever it is we are doing and however we are living?!
The discovery of the answer to this inquiry requires consistent attention and continued awareness. Digging deeper and deeper is necessary to find out the answer. So, if you start with identification of a desire, that assumes to be your deepest desire, then ask: what would that get me? And if I had that desire fulfilled, what would I do then? Keep doing that until you get the answer.
We have polished our minds in such a way that we can easily deceive ourselves, an illusion driving an illusion, and we get caught in the illusion. So, to know the Truth, keep the enquiry alive!
What do you find out?!
