Changing Skin Clothes
Our fixation with skin and skin colors has always been something that fascinates me. Why does the color of our skins matter so much to people? Does my skin say I am smart or less intelligent or does my skin say I like walking on the beach or that I love peanut butter and jelly sandwiches maybe not 😬? But it’s a question I would love to hear your thoughts on.
Where did this fixation with our skin color come from? Where does this concept of a skin color equating to superiority or intelligence or association with a certain social economical class or caste come from and why does it still matter so much today???
There are so many questions that I am sure with a lot of research I can find the origins of this fixation but does it really matter or can our times be better used living in harmony with each, is other another good question?
What does lighter or darker pigmented skin say to people?
Let’s commence this post with a relevant quote by a reputed writer:
“The finest clothing made is a person’s skin but of course, society demands something more than this.”-Mark Twain
This post is filled with more questions than answers, but this show titled Altered Carbon made me start thinking.
We do so much to keep our skin clothes looking a certain way to appear a certain shade. Some of us are ok with the usual hygiene routine to keep our skins clean and hygienic but there are others who go a couple of steps further than just the standard hygienic routine to keep our skin clothes looking “acceptable”. Some bleach their skins to get to a lighter or more acceptable shade based on whatever skin color or skin appearance is appealing to their culture. What people do or don’t do with their skins is their business but the skin care business is a huge business. Just from a quick google search the skincare industry inclusive of various lotions, sun protection products, and skin bleaching products is a $100+ Billion a year industry.
So, with this skin enhancing industry being of such global importance what’s next?
Going back to the show Altered Carbon. In this show they have a very interesting yet probably controversial concept that people will be able to use different bodies/skins like a changeable clothing item called a “sleeve”! With all things human, this advancement will not be accessible nor affordable to all! What a thought provoking concept, if you can afford that ideal body by not having to tan (potential skin cancer hazard) or have to spend countless hours in the gym or doing various exercise routines to appear to have a fit body wouldn’t you just have this interesting procedure to change your skin clothes all together as frequently as you needed? Just imagine today you can have a Latin look or a European look or maybe you want to look “Middle Eastern” or maybe you want to be Black for a day. Is this skin clothes concept or the ability to swap skins like clothes so far fetch? What does the world’s buying patterns suggest?
Are we heading for a world where people can change skins or looks like a fictional shape shifter or can humans finally become fashionable chameleons?
If you can change your skin clothes today would you remain in your skin or would you like to take a walk in my skin ?????
